Starting April 20th, 2021, Women + Weed is curating an ongoing lifestyle photography project meant to help break the stigma surrounding cannabis. We aim to collect photographs of 420 women, with the intention to publish the photos as a collection.

I am a single mom who helps raise my 2 nephews who were abused. Their abuse made news headlines in 2020. "Boy Found in Washing Machine". We are still in court fighting for justice for my two nephews. We are surviving everyday challenges and cannabis helps.

The stigma associated with the use of cannabis impacts me as a woman, mother and grandmother. Too often the perception of someone who partakes of weed is the Cheech and Chong stereotype. For the last 20+ years, I have been repeatedly misdiagnosed, over-medicated on pharmaceuticals that were harmful to my mental and physical health, dismissed and shamed. When doctors couldn't figure out the reason for my stomach pains, they said it was all in my head and threw me on psych meds. When they couldn't figure out my migraines, they put me on narcotics for over a year.
I started medicating with cannabis in high school and it was often the only thing that could help my appetite when I would have been too sick to eat otherwise, and it also helped with my sleeping issues. Unfortunately, it wasn't legal at the time, so it wasn't a sustainable way to continue to treat myself.
Fast forward to the present and I am still having health issues, but I am finally able to benefit from the wonders of legal plant medicine! I spent from 2017-2020 in chronic pain that was once again misdiagnosed and dismissed numerous times (multiple ER visits, doctors, scans/x-rays/tests--you name it). Out of desperation, I tried Rick Simpson Oil and that was the only thing that came close to some kind of pain relief for me (no one believed my pain since they could find no reason for it and said pain meds would only make my symptoms worse, so I had no other option but to self medicate or suffer).
After continuing to push for more testing, in early May 2020 we discovered a 10x11x10cm mass in my left side which tested positive for Leiomyosarcoma cancer, a rare sarcoma cancer. I had surgery in late May, started chemotherapy mid September of 2020 and finished my 6 rounds of that specific chemo mid January of 2021.
Cannabis has truly given me life this last year. When I'm hurting, can't sleep, am nauseated, need to eat--it covers everything--without a ton of added side effects that many pills would have. I may still have cancer, but I'm so grateful to finally have an alternative option to big pharma as I've found there are just too many gaps in western medicine and having healthy alternative options for those in need is vital.
Additionally, because my cancer is not known by many locally, I have to travel to Texas to see a specialist. I continue to educate the doctors, social workers, and other professionals on terminology (medicating vs. 'using'), how I'm medicating/how it's helping me, so that it can be documented and will hopefully help others in the future.
After witnessing firsthand the amazing things cannabis has done for me, I believe everyone should have access to natural plant medicine and I will continue to advocate for it as long as I'm alive!

With all of the health benefits it has this medicine should be used to diseases and break the cycle of the opioid crisis as well as the incarceration of black and brown queen across this country. Women can raise kids, work a full time job, create a loving space and home for their families and only have an hour to themselves before bed. Breaking the stigma brings the barriers down of ignorance surrounding cannabis. I am a huge advocate with educating the community on the benefits of cannabis with podcasts and platforms I run. Cannabis has been here before humans and humans have found a way to utilize this plant. Only recently it was criminalized through ignorance, fear and profit to those incarcerated by it. We have to show that this plant helps everyone in some way shape or form and educate those who have been blinded by misinformation on cannabis.
